Kawasaki disease - patients hospitalized in university hospital for infectious diseases "dr. Fran Mihaljević" in the period 1995 – 2002

Thirty-eight patients with Kawasaki disease (KD) were treated at the University Hospital for Infectious Diseases in Zagreb in the period January 1995 to December 2002. There were 25 boys and 13 girls (male/female ratio was 1.92 to 1). The median age at the time of admission was 22 months. The youngest patient was 141 days old girl. The mean ESR value at the time of admission was 58 mm in 1st hour, while the mean C-reactive protein concentration was 89 mg/L. The diagnosis of KD was based on presence of clinical criteria. All our patients were febrile, 37 of them had bucal mucosa and lip changes and 37 patients had rash. Thirty-five patients had conjunctivitis while acral changes (hand and foot edema, palmar and plantar erythema) and cervical lymphadenitis were present in 33 patients. All patients were treated with high doses of salycilates and 31 patients were treated with IVIG too. Only one girl had relapse of disease after IVIG treatment successfully treated with repeated dose. Coronary artery aneurism was detected in two of our patients while pericarditis was observed in 3 patients. The first echocardiography was done on average 11th day of illness (median 10 days). Conduction abnormalities on ECG were recorded in eight patients. There were no deaths or chronic cardiac sequella of KD among our patients.
